How to lodge the bond in TAS

In Tasmania, you do not collect the bond. All bonds are held by the Rental Deposit Authority (RDA) and managed in MyBond. You (owner) create the bond in MyBond, then tenants pay the RDA directly: either online in MyBond (Visa/Mastercard via PayWay) or in person at a Service Tasmania centre using the bond number/barcode. Cheques/paper lodgement are not accepted, and it’s illegal for an owner to receive bond money directly. You’ll get a Bond Receipt Number by email when payment is processed — keep this safe.

Before you start

  • Accounts: You and each tenant should have a MyBond account. You can register here
  • Tenancy details: Property address, lease start date, weekly rent, bond amount (max normally 4 weeks’ rent).
  • If there’s bond assistance: Have the Deposit Contributor details ready (e.g., Housing Connect reference) so MyBond can notify them to pay.

Exact steps (owner creates bond → tenant pays)

  1. Log in to MyBond → choose Create/Lodge a bond (owner).
  2. Enter property + tenancy details (address, start date, rent, bond).
  3. Add tenant(s) (full name, contact; add contributions if splitting).
  4. Click Save to place the bond in Lodgement in Progress (you can edit), then Next to review and Submit.
  5. MyBond notifies the tenant(s) to pay their bond contribution.
  6. Tenant pays either:
    • Online in MyBond by Visa/Mastercard (secure PayWay), or
    • At a Service Tasmania centre using the bond number/barcode (cash/EFTPOS/credit available at service centres).
  1. Once applied, you and the tenant receive the Bond Receipt Number. Store it with your tenancy agreement and condition report.

Alternative paths

  • Deposit Contributor pays: If a contributor is helping, enter the contributor reference when creating the bond; MyBond will notify them to pay RDA directly.
  • Tenant swaps/changes later: Use MyBond’s Tenant Transfer (Swap/Variation) tools — money moves via MyBond (tenants must not pay each other directly).

Keep for your records

  • Bond Receipt Number email from MyBond, plus your tenancy agreement and condition report.
  • Any contributor correspondence and Service Tasmania receipt (if paid in person).
